Jewelry Design Stamps – Steps to Add Texture to Your Jewelry
They are available in a variety of shapes from figurative to the abstract, from letters to numbers. You can use them creatively to personalize your jewelry. Consider using them to create marks that become your distinctive trademark. They can also add background texture to your piece that can serve as a background to gemstones or other jewelry findings.
Creating marks can seem easy, yet it requires skill and practice. Before you start incorporating markings into your jewelry, I highly recommend you practice.
Start by experimenting on scrap metal or copper – This will allow you to learn the correct pressure you need to apply in order to get a clear imprint.
Create a simple sketch of the jewelry piece you want to make. Decide on the materials and tools you will be using. It is important to include a cushioning material to protect your work area when imprinting..
• Polish the piece before you texture it; this will prevent the polishing wheels from removing your texture.
• Place the tag on an anvil, remember to use a cushion under the anvil to provide stability and lower the noise level.
• Remember that the area of your jewelry piece directly under the mark will become thinner than the rest of you piece. This is particularly important to note on your sketch so that you don’t end with a piece that cracks.
• Markings must be made in your jewelry piece before soldering or adding any jewelry making findings to the back. Remember that imprinting requires a flat surface. Since I have made this mistake myself, I highly recommend you think the jewelry design carefully.
• Position the first jewelry design stamp on the jewelry piece where you’d like the mark to appear. Hold it halfway down so your fingers don’t get pinched or hit with the hammer. Hold it at 90 degrees to your work surface or you will end up with an uneven marking. Do not try to re-mark in the same place, because you will end up with a double or ghost image.
• Rap the back of the hand jewelry design stamp firmly. Exert more pressure if you’re trying to use them on more durable objects like heavy metal tags.
• I use a hardware bought ball pein hammer when I stamp it is cheaper and it saves my highly polished jewelry hammers from being damaged.
• Once you a done using the metal stamps, you may one to add definition to you jewelry design by using a black patina or acrylic paint. Allow the color sink into the grooves, let it dry for a few seconds, then use a soft cloth to buff the excess paint or patina. The result will be a contrasting image of the letters on you polished piece.
