What is a Bail and the type of the bails
A jewelry bail is a jewelry making component (jewelry findings) that attaches a pendant to a necklace, chain, cord, bracelet etc. The pendant slides with the bail onto the necklace. It sits in the centre at the top of the pendant. Usually the bail helps to keep the pendant in position and lying flat.Jewelry bails can also be used with pins and brooches. More examples of these beading essentials are eye pins, head pins & various types of rings.
They differ in size, shape and method that you attach them to the pendant with. They come in a variety of sizes and metals and are usually V- or U-shaped. Some bails can only be used with specific pendants and others can be used with many different kinds of pendants. Jewelry beads are great for any jewelry project. These bails are extremely easy to use – simply use a small drop of Triolyse or a similar glass adhesive to fix the decorative glass to the bail which has a recessed pad that minimizes the glue spreading beyond the edges.
Not only are they useful, but they add a decorative flair to any piece to which they are attached. It is important to match the correct bail to the type of Jewelry charms you want to create, since too small a bail will make the pendant weak, while too large a bail will make the pendant look awkward.
The Different Kinds of Bails
1.Snap-on Bails. Snap-on bails are used to attach stones and pendants that have chain trimming. Snap-on bails are made mainly from brass and silver-plating, but they can also be found in gold and sterling silver as well.
2.Split Bails. Used for attaching larger stones and cabochons, split vails are V-shaped and larger than most other bails. Heavier drilled stones and crystals with beaded edges are a good match.
3.Solder Tab Bails. Create a one-of-a-kind pendant with an over-sized cabochon or stone. The bail is soldered together which makes it stronger than the bails that are clipped or pinched together.
